K-4 Social-Emotional Curriculum

K-4 Social-Emotional Curriculum

Kimochi for Grades K-2:

We are excited to share that this year, our Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classrooms will be using Kimochis as our social-emotional learning (SEL). Kimochis uses playful characters, stories, and tactile tools to help young children translate feelings into words and build the social skills they need to succeed in school and life.

Why Kimochis?

  • Kimochis was inspired by the belief that children respond to characters and stories, and that helping kids communicate—even difficult emotions—can reduce negative behaviors.
  • Developed by experts in speech, communication, and child development, the program is grounded in research and aligned with established SEL frameworks (such as CASEL competencies) and positive behavior strategies.
  • The program uses visual and tactile tools (rather than only verbal discussion) so that children of all skill levels can engage meaningfully.

What This Means for Your Child

Throughout the year, your child will:

  • Learn to identify, name, and communicate feelings
  • Practice strategies for managing challenging emotions
  • Develop empathy and stronger peer relationships
  • Use “feelings tools” and guided lessons that make SEL concrete and child-friendly

We believe Kimochis will help foster a classroom culture of understanding, kindness, and healthy emotional expression. If you’d like to learn more or see some of the materials, please visit: Kimochis

Second Step for Grades 3-4:

“Second Step® Elementary is a research-based program designed to improve students’ human skills, including growth mindset, goal setting, emotion management, kindness and empathy, and problem-solving. Studies show that these skills can support students’ school performance, increase positive social behaviors, and reduce conduct problems such as bullying. Programs that teach these skills can also help create positive classroom and school climates. Second Step Elementary is taught in the classroom, to all students, and helps students develop a common set of skills and strategies that can be practiced, used, and reinforced throughout the school community, including at home.”
